Why have black musicians been taking such long hiatuses from dropping music?

Social media dikkriding is the reason why

They get treated like gods with or without an album so it doesn't feel necessary

It kinda makes me appreciate people like beyonce and kanye who show no signs of stopping

Sometimes other ways to get money present themselves and become more profitable

So an artist it's like do you really want to sit in a studio for months, do press releases and interviews and publicity runs for an album that fans will consume in 2 weeks expecting another?

I understand jay and rhi-rhi.

but I have no idea what frank ocean is doing these days.
Recorded music doesn't pull as much as it did and even those big artists see less return than they are use to do it's become sort of both worth their time and effort to make albums. Most music is being consumed on streaming and older demographics are not showing up as much as the kids who have grown up with this norm. Look at this forum as an example. Dudes are still stealing links to put on hardrives and anti stream. But they want album drops but don't show up for em where it counts.

That's why people are selling vinlys and counting on tours.

I want to say merch has compensated for money made touring. Travis Scott constantly has expensive merch, had that collab with McDonalds, Fortnite etc. You release albums generally, for the tour that comes with it and all the money. To be fair in Travis Scott’s case he isn’t touring for a lot of other reasons..

Same goes for Rihanna with Fenty…

We know the deal with Jay Z, he releases albums when he wants to, basically has no reason to release new music besides appreciation for hip hop and witnessing the evolution of his own craft with age.

Frank Ocean’s brother died in a car accident recently ish…really sad.

Coroner confirms the death of Frank Ocean’s brother, 18, and the tributes pour in

A$AP Rocky is too busy being in Rihanna’s guts, and being a father. And probably also dealing with the fallout of shooting at A$AP Relli

I think SchoolBoyQ always takes his time and doesn’t like to be rushed. I swear every album he complains about people wanting him to drop albums sooner. I think the death of Mac Miller had big impact on him as well. He did say that it wouldn’t feel right putting out an album when Mac died ~4 years ago and idk how long it takes to get over something like that. I imagine the pandemic happening shortly after didn’t help his mental either.

Idk about Nicki Minaj

So much cap and lack of context in this tweet:
  • Travis Scott dropped Rodeo, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, Huncho Jack, ASTROWORLD and JACKBOYS, had the whole Astroworld festival situation, focused on breaking new artists (Don Toliver) and became a father within the past 7 years,
  • ScHoolboy Q dropped Blank Face and Crash Talk, seen one of his closest homies die and became a Soccer Dad within the past 7 years
  • Nicki Minaj became wife and a momma, saw her father pass, and had legal issues with her husband and brother within the past 8 years
  • ASAP Rocky dropped At.Long.Last.A$AP, Cozy Tapes 1 & 2 and TESTING, was locked up in Sweden, was in court for shooting one of his boys and became a father within the past 8 years
  • Jay Z dropped MCHG, 4:44, and the Carters, became creative director at NFL, owned an NBA team, owned a streaming service and nearly died at the hands of his sister-in-law within the past 10 years
  • Rihanna starred in multiple films, ran a multi-billion dollar company and became a momma within the past 10 years
Plus you throw in a whole damn pandemic (a situatiion where people re-evaluated their lives), and it kinda makes sense why you haven't heard much from these mfers recently.

I dont know what Frank doing, though.

This is par for the course.

Michael Jackson took six years between Thriller and Bad

Whitney Houston took 8 years between I’m Your Baby Tonight and My Love Is Your Love

Stevie Wonder took 4 years between Songs In The Key Of Life and Hotter Than July

And so on and so forth

Most artists have historically taken time between projects, they’re not machines. Only one whose considered to have dropped classic after classic in a rapid fire manner was Prince.
