this happens all the time in every genre.
it happens in other genres, but I think in rap there's so much more competition.
no one wants to release an album around the same time, that someone else who is getting/ has more buzz than them is releasing something, unless you're like Jay Z status.. it's all about timing.

I doubt that you check other genres enough to know, cause albums get pushed back all the time.
One thing you might notice however is that rap artists are quicker to throw out dates and also famous for becoming famous before they've dropped their first album.
You might be right about the fact that rappers have bigger egos, 50 cent could've dropped 3 albums by now but he's afraid of flopping.
