I feel like this is one of the big things that's taken a lot of the artistry out of hip hip. Not many people get in the game to actually be a rapper. Everyone thinks they can be Jay-Z and it's just not realistic. Hip-Hop is starting to be seen as a stepping stone rather than a destination, and it's disgusting. It's the main reason hip-hop has been co-opted by corporate America. It's also why I feel like rappers like Kendrick Lamar are so important. They are carrying that artist flag on.
To compare it to rock n' roll, hip hop is where rock was in the 70s and early 80s. A bunch of drugger out money grabbers trying to suck the life out of it. But everything cycles, and hip hops Grunge era will be here soon enough. I think Yeezus could end up being a very important album in hip hops history (despite my personal thought that it's not all that great) as it is bound to influence or inspire someone to hone that sound.
