He said out of his own mouth he doesn't want to release music just to release music. He wants to actually feel like he has something to say.

Nas just had a really good run

As a huge Nas fan I didn't really get much out of his hitboy run. A lot of those projects felt like something he did to get some motion for Mass Appeal so they could do some of the projects they're doing now like Slick Rick, Raekwon ect.

Jay already been through the process of carrying the work load to build up cache for his record label. He'll drop when he feels it's important to drop.

You can chalk it up to being afraid of the numbers or whatever but Jay, if anything is a thoughtful MC. If he says he's only interested in putting out material that matters to him rather than just to stay 'relevant' I don't think he's lying.

Rap USED to be a young man's game when the old heads were young now the old heads are only ones moving the needle. It hasn't been a better time than now for Jay to come back. Look at the state of the game, getting out sold by country
