Because they don't face any real repercussions until they get thrown in that jail and have to fight all the time with other inmates, have to deal with them officers and eat that garbage food. Out on the streets, they were bad, but when you get thrown in an environment filled with dudes just as bad, if not much worse than you, you learn what time it really is.

Prison sets any man's mind straight. Though a SMALL % of prisoners don't mind being in prison due to the lack of confidence in themselves succeeding on the outside, the MAJORITY (approx. 99.5%) dream of getting out. When I was in there all I had was time to think about life outside the prison even though I was incarcerated for 6 years. You get into a routine of the same shyt different day perspective, once the routine is shaken you become hostile. Anyone in the environment is. You gotta be respectful toward everyone cause otherwise you gonna see that guy tomorrow...the next day....the next week...the next month etc. Unless the rat boy comes up front to talk to the Sgt. or someone who locks up for protection or bounces from the facility for fear of getting they ass slashed. But that shyt follows them from prison to prison, if you a rat then you gonna be labeled so anywhere you go. Words travel faster than light in prison. There aint shyt to do but watch TV, exercise, eat, play board games (and cards) with the homies and crack jokes / talk about shyt. There's programs but they are designed for the mentally retarded so if you got a head on you you gonna be bored in there too. All prisoners talk about how they gonna be on the right track with the law when they get out and how they gonna never come back but most do come back due to lack of options and peer pressure And as someone said above, before going to prison you got dudes who think they the baddest and they can't be touched etc. But when they enter the competitive field of THUG SCHOOL they realize that they are just another brick on the wall in comparison. Asian, black, or white; they all get grounded when they enter the atmosphere of prison. Depression seeps through eyes at all times even in the motion of laughter. I used the opportunity to get my health right (via exercising, sleeping 9 hours a day etc.). Gotta learn how to mold in that bytch, otherwise the time is gonna be real tough. Keep the head up and realize that you'll be out soon (unless you on that life sentence shyt ). In essence, prison will break any individual incarcerated PERMANENTLY, the damage is determined by how long you're stuck.
