Why nobody would average 50 today

Its always been such a dumb, unintuitave argument that doesn't understand inertia at all. It would require a guy to score over half of his team's points when they're on the floor and for defenses to just never adjust at all.

Even the most balla dominant guy weve ever seen (2019 Harden) topped out at 45% for a 20 game stretch

Without watching, it should be obvious. Only one person has done it or come close and he was 7 foot, 275, with otherworldy athleticism in a young league that had to change rules to slow him down and he shot 40 times per game. In fairness, I dont think most are serious or truly thinking beyond "guy I grew up on good and guys now bad". But hey...content .

As it’s been said above, 40 seems feasible, but it might be to the detriment of the team.

Not so sure about this. The GOAT in a fast era with no zone taking 27 shots on a bad team got you to 37. His child got you 35 with freedom of movement and way more 3s. Harden got you 36 with foul baiting and way more 3s in a spam offense. Thats the 3 closest in the last 50 years.

All that to say its all but impossible. You would have to have a perfect combo of size, scoring ability, 3 pt shooting, finishing, running the offense, FT shooting, game speed, and team play style. Basically prime KD with Stephs 3 and handle, Brons finishing and playmaking, on a squad with shooters that arent good enough to demand a big role but can keep the defense honest enough, with a coach that is on board.

I would have liked to see what a prime and selfish KD coulda averaged if he spammed 3's and didn't give a fukk about his FG%. I think he coulda got to 40. Also, a healthy Embiid playing 40 minutes a game coulda had some crazy averages, too.

But they can zone and shade. Its gonna be harder to get to the rim in the first place if you cant/dont shoot and you dont have shooters around you.
