I think the rise of conspiracy theorists is also symptomatic of the growing loss of faith of the Western world in itself, in its governing structures, in the highest levels of power. All the horrible shyt that happened in the 20th century took its toll. The counterculture of the 60s was the start.

In the US specifically, it was also the massive realization that the country doesn't quite stand for the things it advertises. It's hard to claim freedom, justice, equality, leaders of the free world and all the other good government bullshyt in the face of Vietnam, COINTELPRO, civil rights issues, assasination of proeminent figures, imperialistic wars, poor economic policies etc.

rational people believe in conspiracy theories because they want to believe there's a reason for everything. to think the world is truly that fukked up and people just fly planes in buildings, bomb marathons, shoot up schools, etc is a scary thought. knowing or believing that it was a calculated move by some malicious organization makes it seem more reasonable.
