"Being in the gym" sounds like what Dahntay was already talking about, coming to the scrimmages and lighting niqqas up off of no work.
I don't think weights would hinder AI's game, taking your quickness from 100 to 97 while gaining strength and durability isn't a hinderance.
Shaq didn't have to completely stop working to be known as a guy whose work ethic was far behind his God given talent.
I know this about Kobe which why I said there's a middle ground between him and the AI/Shaq-type talents.
He would be in the gym working on his game, his conditioning, then they'd play. They all worked out together...76ers and Philly buls. So, saying he didn't work on his game means every Philly-NBA baller also didn't. He played 40-mins a night. Where'd he get that conditioning from if not offseason training? Now, imagine him adding more muscle, then trying to play 40-mins on top of that...it wouldn't have worked.
AI was already strong, and he's not frail at all. They wanted him to bulk up, which would've hindered his game. They kept saying he takes a beating so he needs to add more mass, and get bigger with muscle. That was the problem. He told them he wasn't doing that. It would've hindered his game though. Not only would he lose part of his quickness, he'd have to remodel his entire game...his entire jumpshot. That's like OKC saying they wanted Durant to bulk up like Giannis is now. They wanted him to get stronger, because he was frail, they didn't want him looking like Serge.
It's a myth. In real-time, Shaq didn't stop until after he won the 2nd chip. People were saying the movies, the albums and such would/could affect his offseason focus, BUT he came into each season with different parts to his game. He didn't even have the jump hook until LA. He didn't have the up-and-under until LA. He learned how to maneuver into his spots better like year 3 in Orlando. These are things you work on in the offseason. The OG C greats used to push him off his spots, away from the basket, and not allow him to get into position to go through them. By the time he got settled in LA, he was as much a finesse player, as he was a power player. Of course, the other Cs got older, but he also wasn't going through them as much. He wasn't pushing fast-breaks as much...he wasn't running them as much either. Shaq's main problem is that he was stubborn. If a certain number of possessions happened, and they didn't drop him the ball in the post, he would purposely get a offensive foul or 3 secs, and then wouldn't play defense on like the next 2-3 sequences. He did that in Orlando and LA. That's how it started about him not playing hard. The coming into offseason out-of-shape thing happened after the beef blew out of control.
