Why the Pandemic Is So Bad in America

A pandemic can be prevented in two ways: Stop an infection from ever arising, or stop an infection from becoming thousands more. The first way is likely impossible. There are simply too many viruses and too many animals that harbor them. Bats alone could host thousands of unknown coronaviruses; in some Chinese caves, one out of every 20 bats is infected. Many people live near these caves, shelter in them, or collect guano from them for fertilizer. Thousands of bats also fly over these people's villages and roost in their homes, creating opportunities for the bats' viral stowaways to spill over into human hosts. Based on antibody testing in rural parts of China, Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit that studies emerging diseases, estimates that such viruses infect a substantial number of people every year. "Most infected people don't know about it, and most of the viruses aren't transmissible," Daszak says. But it takes just one transmissible virus to start a pandemic.

Sometime in late 2019, the wrong virus left a bat and ended up, perhaps via an intermediate host, in a human -- and another, and another. Eventually it found its way to the Huanan seafood market, and jumped into dozens of new hosts in an explosive super-spreading event. The COVID-19 pandemic had begun. [...] Being prepared means being ready to spring into action, "so that when something like this happens, you're moving quickly," Ronald Klain, who coordinated the U.S. response to the West African Ebola outbreak in 2014, told me. "By early February, we should have triggered a series of actions, precisely zero of which were taken." Trump could have spent those crucial early weeks mass-producing tests to detect the virus, asking companies to manufacture protective equipment and ventilators, and otherwise steeling the nation for the worst. Instead, he focused on the border. On January 31, Trump announced that the U.S. would bar entry to foreigners who had recently been in China, and urged Americans to avoid going there.

The pandemic is bad in America because in this country there has been a history of one political party constantly pushing the idea of "rights" above common sense (ie. listening to professionals regarding diseases), and the general idea that government is bad no matter what. And it goes without saying that those "rights" are realistically just excuses to do whatever they want, regardless of how it effects their fellow citizen.

And thus a great section of the American populace would much rather risk possible death from disease than be told what to do, ESPECIALLY by the government.

The aforementioned political party, when in control of government, spends lots of time and energy making government LESS efficient, and then maintaining the position that government is bad.

Trump is the fulfillment of that party's dream, as evidenced by his perpetual bungling of easily dealt with situations.

OP likes to pretend he's fair and balanced, even though Donald Trump and his Administration is his wet dream: an inept, unqualified government, that allows businesses to run free and cause destruction to the country, all in the name of profit, under the idea that if the people had an issue with the destruction, they would act accordingly and force their government to correct these wrongs, knowing that the same party that allows these things to happen (when in power) does their best to make it so that said destruction is LEGAL.

All so that you can kick back and say: See government is bad!!

I wonder if I'll get a warning for this one, since I spoke nicely

One of the main arguments against big, overreaching gov is the potential harm it can inflict when an idiot takes the wheel.
Without a guarantee that a moron wont be given the keys its best to keep gov at a low speed IMO. :yeshrug:

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
The elephant in the room is dumbass people pretending like nothing has changed and living their lives as if nothing is happening, clubbing, partying, dating etc.

U can blame politics and shyt all u want but the reality is that the average American is retarded and Darwinism will do it's work

Individualism, Liberty and Freedom

Those 3 things have been embedded into most peoples psyche for generations.

In addition, while everyone is considered "american" there are too many cultures and subcultures in this country,

Add in the political division and what you get is instead of a 100 piece puzzle, you get a 10,000 piece puzzle.

Again, disclaimer of being a Canadian.. but I pay more attention to what's happening down there than I do to what's going on in my own country. Same reason I watch the NFL but not the CFL.

America gutted unions, destroyed its own manufacturing sector, and all of a sudden thousands if not millions of jobs were lost forever. Those positions, with good health insurance, pensions, etc. were lost forever.

Money has been behind this to a massive degree. People like Kochs, Scaifes, etc have infected media and politics with their perverse free-market views at the expense of America's social safety net.

So media and politics have completely and utterly infected the brains of most Americans. Working people hate each other based on race, politics when really they should all be unified against a common adversary: the ruling class. But the ruling class owns the media and forces you to believe what they want you to.

So all of this (among MANY other things, not intended to be an exhaustive list) has happened, the country is more divided than ever, and the American social safety net has all but disappeared. Has this happened in other countries? Sure, but not to this degree - and they have free healthcare.

This is literally the same country that had to campaign to use seat belts. Point blank... People are resistant to change. They'll create mental delusion to justify it.

Then, you have TV and Conspiracy Culture create irrational delusion with the ever growing divide in America because of a two party system.

But you should still check out the Lizard people one. That shyt had me rolling. :bryan:

This would only be fair if we didn’t have a big, overarching population. Since this is the case, the only sensible solution is different government, but usually not less. Nobody has the answers BUT we do have an idea of what ain’t it chief
