Why was the Vikings Love Boat scandal a scandal?

To this day I don't recall anyone alleging that a rape or any type of assault happened during that party. The big bad football players were getting their "big bad football player" steeze on (with consensual partners from what I remember) and it blew up into a PR nightmare. EVERY football team consisting of adult aged men have wild bacchanals. So why did this one blow up?

Was it just Puritan America reeling from what it saw once the curtain got pulled back a bit on their sports stars and their kids' (supposed) role models?

Very true. I just don't get how any event can become a scandal if no felonious activities are involved. Only thing somewhat salacious (to media, not me) would be if married guys were taking part in the festivities.
