Why wasn't Biz Markie criticized for making 'Just A Friend' back in the day?

Nobody was saying 'this isn't hip hop' or 'save that singing shyt for the r&b cats'

What has changed? Why can't a hip hop artist delve into the mainstream anymore without receiving harsh criticism?

If some shyt like this were to come out now what would be different... :patrice:

is fun in hip hop not 'hood' enough nowadays? what's with this growing obsession of living vicariously through actual street cats

let's discuss

Because once the grimy 90s came along and gangster rap took over the mainstream all of a sudden a rapper had to have all these pre requisites to b a rapper, or fit certain retarded criteria. It no longer became about talent rather you had to have street credibility. After that, it wasnt "cool" to b different and anybody else that wasnt a bonafide goon was basically considered a fakkit n not official enough to rap.

Well first of all he was rapping on the song...
second of all its all about context, nothing wrong with a rapper rapping about whatever he feels including women...
but if EVERY artists is rapping about women then thats just non-singing r&b

Only new yorkers can have fun and sing and do anything they want in rap. That's why new york rap is dead right now, they pigeonholed their damn selves to the point where they can't do shyt because of all the shyt they give others for doing it.

Soon as someone from another region had "fun", they were killing hip hop. Everybody else is a hip hop murdering fakkit for having fun. Biggie prolly the biggest fakkit in hip hop history and look at all the passes he got. All them gay lines, gay best friend, gay dj, trannies in music videos. Mos def be trying to sing his ass off. No one says shyt.
