Why would a loving God send people to hell?

So why doesn't God make everyone into perfect beings and allow them all into heaven? It would actually be more cruel if God were to do this, since many people prefer hell to the alternative (complete submission to God). All the people who end up going to hell will have done so because they actually prefer hell to being forced into the presence of God for all eternity. People like to live in their favorite sins and answer to no one else. They know that if they accept Jesus as Lord and Savior that God will want them to change their lives and they might have to give up some of their autonomy.

ETA: Not sure if y'all get my point. I'm a Christian and I came across this website when I was having doubts about my religion last night. I found this answer to a question that I, and several other former/current atheists and agnostics ask in an attempt to discredit the belief of God.

i'd let an unreformed serial killer in my house if i knew he couldn't kill me nor anyone i loved, plus if i had the added benefit of being able to resurrect anyone the serial killer did kill....

Would you punish a person who had never met you who had no reason to believe you did all the amazing things your mama tells them you do?

This is actually a very good point. I mean, can souls be murdered in heaven? What threat does a person who was a serial killer on Earth pose to souls in heaven with god? Could he not just protect them?

Again, no critical thoughts allowed.

I wouldn't expect to get a rational answer on this, usually the reply to this is something along the lines of either -


1. You choose/deserve to go to hell for not following their religion

2. Something about how having free will justifies this
