Will music play a role in the redemption of black folk at all?

Is music a 'nation rebuilding tool'?

The uninformed me would have said yes. Since I have lost all faith, although sometimes one might dream...

No. It shouldn't have to either. If you're depending on musicians to be the life blood of your community then that means you're lacking in many other resources and that's not a good thing.

Yeah I agree.

I had an extensive conversation about this with a Black film director of 30 year experience in the industry. He strongly disagreed, but I could sense he couldn't quite grasp the dismay of Black music in 2014.

Music will not play a positive role in the lives of Black men and wombmen until we control our own media empires

Hotep my brother, thanks for the reply

Check the video, don't sleep :mjpls:

As a medium, nothing comes close to it, and hip hop culture has for better or for worse, filled the culture void left by slavery. We should take it seriously in conversations about rebuilding the black community.

Yeah. Music is the reason for hip hop boards like this... in the 80's and 90's certain artist made it so that it's cool to do your own research about history and social issues.
It's not like music negates a focus on technology and business.
If music can be used to promote negativity, then it can also be used to support positive movements. Music was a medium in the 50's and 60's- that was some powerful music during the time.

People downplay the effect that music has on people that weren't raised properly. All I can say is that the negative based music has been stretched to its limits. A track like "Happy" is a godsend in this era because very few people actually make tracks like that, and IT ACTUALLY MAKES PEOPLE FEEL GOOD.

I disagree with this, simply because hip hop culture is something that has been moulded and manufactured by white men in suits. From the clothing, to the speech, to the agendas

all made by white men

black people didnt invent/ make jordans, snapbacks, new eras etc etc etc

we're a created people, even down to our culture

it was gonna but got stopped in its track.

the brasilian slaves coordinated through music but we new slaves got ourselves in a very difficult situation because we're not using music to speak to each other anymore. we are but not in a productive way.

not sure how the motown era black music was taken by their parents because "corporations" had already had the music industry by the grip, but the motown negros seem to do a lot better than this generation of negros in terms of control of their music. but even that was disbanded by the govt.

using corporations black ppl/culture/music has been put in check.

Its a medium, a vehicle for information, and in this, its unmatched. Putting a message in a rap song, will reach more members of the black community than any book... save the bible.

and all i'm saying is we shouldnt discount it.

i agree, i was responding to kingsman's post that music is equivalent to mathematics and science
