I mean maybe the answer to your question is no, the fans rejected Kendrick's song for the most part and it wont be popular, even with the Interscope machine behind it.

The beat is pretty bad, especially now. I thought the concept / video with the kids was cool though.

There wasn't really a time when all concious songs were popular on a mainstream level. People acting like the 90s was all positive songs when all the big singles/albums around then really came on the back of gangsta rap/gangsta rap albums.
