While self-driving cars may be safer and cheaper, the Associated Press warns they could also create massive traffic congestion. "The problem, say transportation researchers, is that people will use them too much." One auto industry expert predicts that self-driving cars will increase travel by those over 65, as well as those between 16 and 24, resulting in at least 2 trillion extra miles being driven each year. In addition, "Airlines also may face new competition as people choose to travel by car at speeds well over 100 mph between cities a few hundred miles apart instead of flying," and faster commute times could mean more urban sprawl as workers may spread into cheaper neighborhoods that are further from the city center.

If the vast majority of cars on the road become self-driving, it will fix the congestion issue in itself. Computerized driving will create a far more efficient traffic pattern. We can save time by avoiding the human reaction time, avoiding people not paying attention to lights or the car in front of them, etc. A large part of the congestion problem is people merging and moving in and out of lanes causing everyone behind them to slightly lag behind. If its self-driving, the time saved by automated driving will def help lower travel times even in heavy traffic.

This occurred to me, that if you get to a point where cars are synced then they can be allowed to travel faster especially if you have dedicated lanes. A 100 miles per hour is a Big Deal...::whew:. .......

Id rather be in a car that drives itself especially in traffic. If im going to be stuck on the highway for over an hour. Might as well be able to nap, check out the coli, watch netflix, ect and not be stressed out trying to drive:manny:
