A picture of Unathi with no make-up trended on Twitter last week, with people making cruel comments about her 'ugly' appearance

The picture reportedly was tweeted by Unathi in reposnse to a fan's request for a no-make-up selfie.

The image went viral last Thursday and some of the comments that followed it were less than kind to the celebrity, who is usually praised for her beauty.

Speaking to eNCA.com on Friday, Unathi said: "I’m not going to say no to a fan who wants a photo, just because I’m not wearing make-up.”

The star also posted a picture of her crying during Idols and captioned it: “I cry to release the pain because I can’t live with it. I cry because I am so happy at that moment and words escape me. To feel is to live! To live is to feel!”

However, Unathi's supporters jumped to her defence against those who were saying terrible thing about her
One commented: “You are beautiful in and out Unathi, one of my favourite women in SA.”

“Beauty is more complex and deeper than most seem to understand, Wise move not to respond to her as she'd hoped you would. It's an age old cheap publicity stunt to publicly take a shot at a famous person and lavish the attention you get when they responds,” another supporter said.

Unathi thanked the ladies who stood by her side: “Thank you for your love, defense and pride. I really am okay because I really have never been into my appearance. I just worry about young women because we seem to love to destroy each other.”

That is a particularly terrible picture.

Anyway there's this girl in my class who never wears makeup. Last week I'm walking on campus and I see her but this time she had makeup on.
