Houston to LA like I'm Robert Horry.
So I got this well paying job in the oil and gas services roughly 6 months ago. However, thanks to OPEC a lot of these oil companies are laying off people including mine. My boss actually got laid off and right now I put my chances at 50/50. Understandable, it happens.

The part I can't stand is this cave bytch that I work along basically selling her soul and any trustworthy credibility she has to hold on to this job. :scust:

First, trying to comfort our boss about her loss of position and saying she might be on board with joining her. Then the next day telling her new boss all the things our old boss did wrong. :scust:

She realizes we're only going to keep a few from "our" group so she is highkey trying to downplay everyone else's achievements to the new boss. People she considered "friends" .Talking about how my degree isn't even in the area that the department is in. Talking about other people's work ethic :stopitslime:

The amount of obvious kiss assing she is doing to the new boss is disgusting, trying to get to know him "personally" and everything, it isn't even genuine. I'm listening to this bullshyt as I type this :scust:

It just isn't in me to kiss ass or shyt on another person to a boss:scust:

You're going to have to judge me by what I've accomplished, and I'm the team lead on the biggest project in our department, but go ahead and keep the white girl whose working on the smallest spend in our company :troll:

I'm only 22 and I can't imagine being in this type of environment for a long time. I can't wait to go back to school and start my own shyt :scust:

I know my other brehs have to deal with this office politics shyt.

You're not there to make friends or actually enjoy the job are you? If so good luck with all that. You main goals should be to gain some resume worthy skills, network, get paid and keep it moving.

Do you have a career plan? If they are laying off people I would hope your resume is updated and you've sent it over to your job's competitor.

It happens, no such things as friends in corporate America, so you should expect this in that type of environment. I keep everything professional at work, I don't buddy up with people, nor do I get involved with their personal matters. Keep it cordial and friendly, Always keep the resume fresh and be ready to exit when it's time.

I don't care too much about friends in the workplace, but I would like a job I enjoy. I knew early on this was temporary until I can go back to school and work on my PhD for the career I really want. And trust I'm already sending this resume out.

Just got to wait and see. You always hear about corporate, but until you see someone figuratively get on their knees and lose all sense of common decency, let's just say it's eye opening.

I'm not nearly as close to my coworkers as she is and I still wouldn't shyt on them like that.

I would think most people want to take jobs they actually enjoy

Of course they want do, but very few do. I don't see how anyone can every get any true enjoyment out of making someone else rich :manny:

In my opinion, I think how much you enjoy your job depends on how stable you are financially. If you are living paycheck to paycheck then it's going to be hard to figure out what you like what you do because you kind of don't have another choice. If you're straight financially you can focus more on figuring out if you actually like the work or just the paycheck attached to it.

I've learned that many times - contrary to popular belief - you can let your work do the talking for you.

I got a job about 8 months ago and have busted my ass, saying little to others but maintaining a very cordial relationship with most people in the office. They send me tasks, i get them done promptly and accurately with good presentation and follow up. This has led to great feedback and compliments about how fast and smart i am. I'm the only one who can and who does my job in my department too so most people dont bother me.

Fastforward 7 months into my work term/contract...they opened up a call center in my office. They hired some people including this one black woman (i say black because it made her behaviour even more perplexing ...were supposed to look out for one another). I remember after all thse ppl were hired we had a small meeting with head office and to introduce ppl. This girl was immediately sucking up to her manager whom I work with mentioning how nice she is and how great of a trainer she is etc. Nothing wrong with that, the manager is great after all but it was so prenounced...almost seemed forced. I later learned she just has a spunky personality.

Anyways, as I said earlier I do my work very fast and well so often times I'll be at work just chilling browsing the coli or cbssports like I am now with a relaxed lean in my chair. I suppose it looked like I do nothing, so this new chick would often have something to say whenever she walked by to hit the fridge up, go to the washroom whatever. One day she full on asked me, "what do you do here?" I said, "dont worry about it :ld:" to which her reply "was they pay you to do nothing? :rudy:" and then i mentioned that I handle the financial reporting/budgeting etc. Mind you I sit relatively close to my managers office, an office that has an open door throughout the day.

Her antics continued throughout the office I guess. Low and behold, she didnt last more than three weeks here before being let go. Meanwhile, the guy, me, who apparently gets paid to do nothing is still standing alive and well posting on the coli. :sas2:

Oh...did I mention I demanded and got a 25% raise 3 weeks ago too? :sas1:

Moral of the story, building a reputation for being a good worker and easy/polite person to work with > sucking up to superiors. If you prove your worth by differentiating yourself from others and bring something valuable to the table you will win 9/10 times.

It depends though.

Lets say dude works for Chevron or some shyt. This isnt a mom and pop shop or burger joint owned by one person. In some cases of course you have a billionair at the helm but many times its a slew of hedge funds, investment management firms, banks and such investing this money in CVX to increase the return for somebody's pension, an insurance fund, RRSP etc.

So who are we really making rich? It's bigger than that IMO. People gotta get in where they fit in. If you dont have the formal education you shouldnt be an entrepreneur in my opinion. I point to my mom's failures as proof.

That being said, as somebody with the education and a team with a platform, I hope to make some entrepreneurial moves in the next 3 yrs

Good point. I didn't look at it that way. With that said being an entrepreneur doesn't always mean you have to be the boss with people working under you or stuff like that.

Being an independent contractor is a form of entrepreneurship to me because I have more control over how much money I make although I would technically be working for someone else...they would just be my clients. That's they goal I'm trying to get to within the next couple years.
