mixtapes are nice because it leaves creative control and you can release tracks without sample clearances, BUT.. it also can be over-saturation, create a fickle fanbase that expects free music and doesn't buy your shyt and it leaves less "hunger for more" and hype when it comes time to drop your album when you just dropped a tape 8 months ago. it goes from

"___ is dropping new music! ":ohhh:" to ":ehh:"

features and few "throw aways" throughout the year should be enough to hold your fanbase over until your next album. artists needa stop feeding into the add generation. the cons outweight the pros, imo.

Do you mean when they first starting.. because I agree, so far gone really elevated drake..

But I mean someone like wayne who's already established pushing out tape after tape after tape

this, nothing wrong with mixtapes if you're a "has been" or someone on the come up.. mixtapes should be used as a grind to get your name out there and elevate you to the level to get you noticed, but once artists are already getting exposure and gaining momentum, stop the mixtapes.

do features, throw a track out every few months between your album releases, get a song on a compliation.. video game soundtrack, movie soundtrack.. i feel anything extra, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

it's a cycle like a exercise. wayne keeps droppin tapes to get momentum for the NEXT album. its just a common unfortunate thing most mixtapes come out better then the albums. but their mixtapes usually put together by the artist themselves. whereas the albums get confiscated by the labels and etc and thats that. every artist you can think of had to make atleast one mixtape in they career. mixtapes aint goin nowhere. they just became over saturated due to the actual quality street music surpassing the hype for WACK albums (according to fans) or even pushed back albums and etc. mixtapes are 10 dolla crack bags. albums unfortunately are usually labeled wack but the bigger picture is the label the money and the appeal to the masses. so either way wayne feedin his core audience. i've been listenin to french montana for 7 years and i still havent heard more then half of his major label debut album :dead:

They are amazing if done right. So many artists would have no tour money if it wasnt for mixtapes, which is where the real money is made for artists these days. Nikkas crack on him, but lil b is worth almost 1.5 mil from free mixtapes and show bread

Bad examples. You would be better off using Big Krit, Rick Ross or Gucci Mane as an example.
Weezy been in the game 15+ years.
Big sean?
Drake hasnt had a tape since so far gone.

In any case, A-list rappers dont issue mixtapes. Rick Ross and Lil Wayne are probably the only ones that do.

Kendrick, Eminem, Jay, Nas, Kanye, Drake, ASAP hasnt in god knows, None of them have recent tapes

Its typically niche rappers (Freddie Gibbs), hasbeens (50) and those without a major label push that issue them (Lloyd Banks)
