If you never played a certain sport competitively , then your opinion on the game is less valid than those who have ?

I feel a lot of people that critize professional athletes are the ones who never played the game.

Let's say you played competitive basketball growing up. It would be hard for you to hate on any pro NBA players because you know how much talent it takes to get to that level and you can appreciate their work.

Nope. Plenty of coaches never played the sport they coach in.

Plus, it's all opinion when it's all said and done.

Not saying they had to play professionally. I'm pretty sure majority of coaches in pro sports played that sport competitively at some point in their life

It's mostly in relation to their peers tho. Like we'll say how much :trash: Kwame was as a player but no one here has the delusion to say they're better or they'll beat his ass 1 on 1.

And even then many players make it to the NBA over more deserving ones because they happen to 7+ft or fit a certain need :manny:

Look, athletes have a certain level of understanding of the game that the casual fan does not have. But at the same time, they're in it. And so many times the athletes themselves aren't able to take a macro perspective on certain things that offers a different (or better) understanding of what actually happens in the game.

Angelo Dundee never boxed a day in his life (far as I know). Pretty sure his opinion on boxing mattered more than, say...George Chuvalo.

I guess what I meant to say is.

People that didn't play sports competitively are more often the ones who trash professional athletes. Like nerds in high school hating on the star qb or basketball player.

Look at it from a different perspective.

Should you not be able to criticize Trump because you've never been the president or held any type of political position?
Should you not be able to critique a game or movie because you can't code or have no experience directing plays or movies?

You're getting off topic. This isn't about who is able to critique and who isn't.

It's about opinions on whatever matter. My opinion in politics compared to a actual politician. Who would be more credible ?

I can critique the shyt out of a movie but someone who is a director or actor can see things about that movie that I wouldn't be able to see.

Some of the biggest political analysts have never had any type of political positions. Roger Ebert was one of the most famous movie critiques but AFAIK he never directed or played in one :manny:

I'd agree that being a professional player helps a lot in seeing things that someone who wasn't doesn't know about. But at the end of the day, it depends on how valid their points and analysis and knowledge of the game. Shaq & Chuck are among the greatest NBA players to ever lace them and most of their analysis is just :ld:

Some of the greatest minds in spots never played professionally or weren't good enough at that level.

It's interesting...

An individual who has dedicated his entire hobby life to becoming an observer of the game can have a lot of insightful analysis to offer.

It's condescending as fukk to assume an individual who hasn't played a sport competitively can't give really good opinion on said sport.

Depends on what the opinion is about. Experience > Offhand knowledge most of the time

That said, you don't have to play at the highest level to give an informed opinion about a sport. You'll never understand what it's like to be in a super bowl until you're in one but it's still the same game.

The question is if his opinion is less valid than someone who has played.
