100 billion Earth-like planets just in our galaxy. Add that to the fact there are at least 100 billion other galaxies in the observable universe and the number of potential planets with life like ours could be in the trillions.
With all this said, I think the existence of aliens on another planet would provide DEFINITIVE PROOF that religions like Christianity/Islam/Judaism are FALSE. These religions are based on the belief that our creation was special and that we are made for a purpose. I think the day we find other creatures living on other planets and see that they don't worship the same Gods we do, is the day most people will finally realize that religion is a fraud.
All in all any aliens would create a clusterfukk of problems for organized religion. But aliens with intelligence comparable to our own would be the death nail for organized religion. Religion doesn't explain why God would create other worlds with other creatures living on other planets. And if some of these planets have intelligent life like ours, does that mean those people are also saved? Or did God just leave them alone and only decided to tell us? And if those people on other planets didn't need Jesus to save them or Allah to tell them what to do, then why do we?
I'll give you religious people this though. If we find aliens and they are also worshiping Allah or Jesus, you best believe I'll convert on the spot cause that would be the first valid evidence for the existence of your God.
