Former Mayor Ed Koch died early this morning. He was 88.

Koch was moved to intensive care yesterday as his condition worsened. Koch – who served as mayor from 1978 to 1989 – died at about 2 a.m. today.

NY POLITICIANS MOURN DEATH OF ED KOCH

Koch had been in and out of the hospital in recent months, and was admitted Monday at New York Presbyterian Medical Center.

“Earlier today, New York City lost an irrepressible icon, our most charismatic cheerleader and champion, Edward I. Koch," Mayor Bloomberg said in a statement. "He was a great mayor, a great man and a great friend. In elected office and as a private citizen, he was our most tireless, fearless and guileless civic crusader. Through his tough, determined leadership and responsible fiscal stewardship, Ed helped lift the city out of its darkest days and set it on course for an incredible comeback. We will miss him dearly, but his good works – and his wit and wisdom – will forever be a part of the city he loved so much. His spirit will live on not only here at City Hall, and not only on the bridge the bears his name, but all across the five boroughs.

Koch was a big thing in the 80's. He was right there during the crack epidemic.....He Wasn't really a favorite by Blacks....In 1989 David Dinkins became the first Black mayor of NY right after Koch.

Koch was actually OK with black folks in the early 80s. He was the main push behind a lot of affordable housing in run down areas. His main downfall came because of corruption that he either knew about or didn't do enough to stop, and also the racial tensions in the late 80s cause of the Howard Beach and Bensonhurst incidents. The Bensonhurst incident in particular, was a big reason why Dinkins won the election, and even then it was by a slim margin over Giuliani.

Cause most of these New Yorker these day aren't really from here to begin with and the ones that knew of him are old any way if it was Bloomberg or guliani it would of been big news :manny:

And sadly, it will be like that even more so when Dinkins passes. Koch was a celebrity, had been mayor forever and stayed in the public eye. David Dinkins was only in office four years and kinda faded away outside of being seen at the US Open.
