I was hyped up for the first match. The fact that it was booked a year in advance made it more special. It actually forced WWE to do some long-term (for them) storytelling with things like Cena saying he's going to bring the WWE Championship to the match with him and the Survivor Series tag match. One problem (among many) with WWE is that nothing feels important or big time anymore. This was one of the last times that a feud or match felt important, like you had to tune in just to see what happens.
The second match was unnecessary and it was way too obvious that Cena was going to win. What made the first match meaningful was that it could have gone either way. Plus, you had Cena saying that this was a match he had to win, like his career meant nothing if he couldn't beat Rock. Then he loses, and he gets another shot to beat Rock. What was going to happen other than Cena winning? There was no heat, no excitement, and it didn't feel important. They should have called an audible that year and booked a triple threat with Punk.
