One provision often referred to as Section 1981 says all Americans should have the same rights to sue and enforce contracts “as is enjoyed by white citizens.” The Wisconsin Institute, which says it supports litigation promoting “individual initiative and ordered liberty that leads to prosperity,” essentially turned that section on its head by gathering several white, male business owners as plaintiffs.

Starbucks officers and directors were sued in August 2022 by National Center for Public Policy Research, a conservative think tank that owns 56 shares in the coffee chain.
