I'm seeing that said online and don't get it Mostly on political shyt. But I just saw it in the comment section of the new Jhenei Aiko song with Big Sean... This shyt becoming a thing?
its like a person who keeps lying to a point making you think your crazy for even accusing them of lying... its like when you catch a chick red handed in bed with another dude and she keeps saying NOTHING HAPPENED...
Ah..I see. And what's the recommended way to react to gas lighting? I figure since it's a defined thing someone had thought of the best retaliation...
There was a movie in, I think, 1944, or 1937, and it was called "Gas Light", it was based on a play in London, and another movie, but the remake from 1944 with Charles Boyer, and Ingrid Bergman is the one everyone knows, and where the term comes from. In the movie, a man tries to drive his new bride insane, in their London brownstone, by slowly convincing her she as lost her grip on her sanity. He steals things he gives her, and convinces her she lost them. He hides things and just generally wages psychological warfare on here, to break her down. The actual "gaslights" are old fashioned lamps, and the movie features one prominently, that she keeps insisting is on, but no one will believe her, even though it very much is, during the middle of the night. The movie is considered a classic, and worth watching, if you like noir/suspense. The term is used mostly in relationships, now, vis a resurgence on instagram and such, where often (men) "gaslight" their spouse, "you embarrassed me", or "you are always flirting with my friends", "you made me look stupid", so the persons self worth and self value plummets, and the gaslighter assumes more and more control of the relationship, and the spouse questions less and less. In the movie, Boyer, needs to gain control of the estate, by committing Bergman to an insane asylum, so he can find the jewels he hid there years earlier. Also, re: infidelity, people discuss this commonly, like if you are cheating, accuse the other person. In politics, it is the Fox News/GOP spin on any facts that make the admin look bad.
Declare that you will vote for Bernie, and only for Bernie, and nothing can change your mind. Then it doesn't matter what tactics are used. The Democratic party is coming with us whether they want to or not. Bernie will be the nominee and we will drive them deaf with chants of "Vote Blue, No Matter Who"
It's more than that. It's full on psychological manipulation through lies, deception and other underhanded tactics. It's pattern of abusive behavior in an attempt to control someone else.
It's a completely valid term, but like everything else it is overused in social media culture. I've seen it used repeatedly online to describe simple disagreement on the facts.
It’s more than just lying. It’s also phrasing events/situations in such a way to get the 2nd party to question their assessment of a situation. Lying is not telling the truth. Gaslighting is being deceptive to gain advantage of a 2nd party through their own doubts.
Anything you say to a woman that she disagrees with or doesn't want to hear will be labeled as "Gas lighting". Disregard it, Stand firm, Tell that chick when shes' wildin'
Basically what republicans have been doing through trumps whole Impeachment debacle. They fixate on shyt that has no bearing on the facts like trying to out the whistleblower (probably a democrat thats why) when we have direct evidence and witnesses, low key threatening people or slandering them, implying Vindman is a manchurian candidate they were literally making an issue of him wearing his military uniform yesterday
