Holy crap im seriously mad right now!!!
It's an Italian pseudo-shockumentary, part of the 70s acid-fueled Mondo series that went after everything and everyone. It validates itself as a brutal critique of the slave trade by having the actors recite actual slave letters for some of their lines. Will it make you heated? Is it completely racist? You bet, but only to shock and provide as close a lens to the horrors of slavery as possible, or at least as it was seen through foreign eyes. Of course, some of the scenes were more dramatized to get butts in theatre seats, but the filmmakers overall wanted to make a story about a documentary crew that went back into time to slavery days. Too bad they had to make it as senseless as possible, but hey, anything to get a message across.
Now of course, they could never film anything this brutal today, but in the 70s, everyone was over the top (anyone ever seen Mandingo?), and especially the whole Mondo series saw the line non it, not caring who's toes they stepped on.
So at face value, with no backstory, this movie can set your rage meter all the way up to maximum, but after reading what the hell it's about (pretty much a prerequisite for a lot of 70s movies), you'll at least have a little understanding, even though you still might not be feeling the execution.
Side note: I just skimmed bits n pieces, but did anyone else mute the sound and watch 1:03:28 to 1:05:34
Also, cacs got dat work in the end tho![]()
It was powerful they just needed to execute it betterits one of the most powerful depictions of chattel slavery ever put on film for both the right and wrong reasons...watch it if you dare because it you won't forget it anytime soon
