Never had a 360.... I can only imagine how azz that was.

The biggest thing I remember about the DVD playback kit was once it was on people NEVER removed it, I lost count of how many times I saw dusty old Xboxes in pawn shops with that dumb DVD kit still on it.

During the 360 and PS3 launch a key part of the war was over the future format of movies on disc.
Blu Ray vs HD-DVD.
Microsoft placed their bet on the HD-DVD format and released a separate HD-DVD drive to connect to your Xbox 360 to watch HD movies.
PS3 on the other hand, had the Blu Ray drive built in and while PS3 was the more expensive console, I know A LOT of people went with PS3 as a movie player that could play PlayStation games.

If I recall correctly, Microsoft got the brakes beat off them so bad in the format war that they even had a buy back / refund program for a limited time.
