In a nutshell from what I read, they want to use AI to basically "preserve" old games vs porting/remaking since the latter involves more spending.
The examples in the article were very early, WIP so I can see what they want to do but for now it seems too early to start getting excited for this. More time in the oven and a demo for people to see/play may be needed. I know game purists will be the first one to rip apart any inconsistencies especially with how AI is often having issues with certain details. An example at a latter time using some old Xbox games or 360 games looking 1:1 or better would be promising.
