To anyone wondering: yes, Microsoft has to pay the Blu-Ray foundation some money for using the sensor. Since Sony is a founding member they will get a chunk of whatever Microsoft has to cough up to the foundation. Also, yes, Sony will have to pay for the codecs for H264. Microsoft also pays royalties on the H264 codec. Both are MPEG-LA members, so Microsoft "owning" the codec isn't entirely true. Sony is also a founding member of MPEG-LA so I'm sure they have more rank so to speak. Sony has to pay for WMA/WMV codecs more than likely as well.

Touchpad could be used in battlefield 4 per example in so many awesome ways, but it seems Microlauce has some clauses in which it says the game must be played the same way in every console :beli:

Is this cross game chat just one on one like private chats on xbox, or is it party chats with like 8 people at once on different games? Because they are very very different. Party chat is where its at, will ps4 have that? Or just two people talking talking in cross game?

Cross game chat (private chat) was wack, but all we had when trying to get into the same ranked games on gears of war 1, but parties (up to 8 people in a party) are a beast and are a must if playing with more than one friend.

Does anybody know if ps4 with have a party type functionality?

YES!!!! The PS Vita already has it.

Plus, here's some pics & video of the PS4 UI:

Side note: I swear video game presenters/actors are the worst. It always comes off as awkward and unnatural.

It looks like party, but not really like what im talking about, I mean that looks more like a text type party, while only have voice chat with one other person, but the girl was on her mobile, so of course she would'nt have joined. the way it is now on xbox, I could talk to you, her, and both of the dudes (voice) at the same time like a 8 way call.

The party screen showed more than one person , but we only hear two guys talking the whole time, which leads me to believe that the party is just chat (text functionality) and the guys were in cross game chat (private chat)

Thanks for bringing the info to me tho, it could be either way, I guess wel'll see soon

I think with the OS only taking up 1GB it will stop what the ps4 can do later as far as implementing things, they cant just add more ram for the OS, otherwise some games might not work, if you are talking instant switching, and such, sure ps4 could just build up apps, but I dont think they will as fast as xbox

Look HBO Go isnt even on ps3, I watch the wire, and game of thrones on my xbox (I dont have cable so this is a big thing over pS3), sony's apps arent close to what xbox has' sure its a bunch of stuff I dont use, but its still more than whats available on my ps3

On anything but graphics xbox will win out, and have the better experience IMO, but sure save $100 breh :yeshrug:

First of all, Windows has a notorious reputation for being a RAM hog & slower compared to other OS', so you can't compare the OS memory footprint of the Xbox1 using Windows 8, while the PS4 uses FreeBSD 9 with a Linux compatibility layer.

Win 8 is very good on resources. One of the most optimized OS out there.

Compared to what? Windows 7 or Vista? No shyt, Windows 8 is basically a wannabe Tablet OS. But, Windows is still a RAM hog & less secure than other Desktop OS' out there.

If that is true, who fault is it? Sony has a history trying to over designing shyt and failing at it. Compared to what? itself of course. Windows is the OS of the world. Linux is small time and not feature rich in the consumer market. Win 8 is actually a very nice running OS. (don't confuse nice running with ui issues some have)

It doesnt change the fact that they cant just add more ram later for the OS, we dont know how the special version of windows thats on xbox will be since its made for certain parts, and does have to account for the other systems that would regularly be running the OS kinda like apple, they can optimize for just a few parts, also, a lot of the ram is for smooth transitions and instant things (there will be alot going on on the xbox), the ps4 wont be able to add that later they way xbox does with just 1 GB or ram I dont care what os they are running, but they could have apps sure, launch one then quit and go to the next but it wont be they same as xbox

Yeah Xbox has 3 OS's. One for gaming, the other for windows. And a third OS made to assist both with interacting with each other...
Xbox One runs three operating systems, including cut-down Windows for apps

I don't think I properly explained why 3GB of RAM for the OS on the XB1 vs. 1GB for the OS on the PS4, isn't really a big advantage for the XB1 when it comes to OS functions & Apps (besides the fact that Windows has a notorious reputation for being a RAM hog & slower compared to other OS').

First of all, like courtdog said: The Xbox1 has 3 OS's: 1 is the "Xbox OS" for gaming, 1 is "Windows 8" for The System OS/Apps. And a third OS made to assist both with interacting with each other...

The PS4's OS is called "Orbis OS". It's a modified version of "FreeBSD 9". "FreeBSD 9" free open-source Unix-Like OS, that is the base code for a lot of OS' like Netflix's Open Connect Appliance & Apple's "Mac OS X". It'll be obviously used to run the games on the PS4.

The key thing to note is that the base "FreeBSD" has a built-in "Linux compatibility layer". Since the PS4 has a x86-64 & a "ARM" CPU, this means it's gonna be easy to port Apps/programs from Linux & Linux based-OS' (examples: Google Chrome/Chromium OS, Google Android, GoogleTV, Ubuntu, & etc.)

So the PS4's OS/Apps-capability is gonna be able to hold it's own against against the XB1, if not do better.

Without getting too technical about this because Im fully capable of that. With only 1 gig of ram for os duties its going to be limited on multitasking which the X1 will excel at. So no just because you can have a "app" when its not doing anything else You're not going to be able to do more than 1 complex function at once. Even top android phones are going to 2 to 3 Gb of ram.

:stopitslime:

Please stop it. Windows is a fukking juggernaut. This is coming from a die hard Apple fanboy who also has an Android phone and runs a Ubuntu web server.

It will do nicely if Sony even allows devs to make use of the compatibility layer. But if we are talking about the capability of porting desktop apps and it becoming a reality then Windows >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Every other OS you named combined x5

That's a very cute and passionate speech
Now may I inform you of the flip side to that? Cool!
The OS that the Xbox uses is the same one 99% of all games are made on. When a developer is creating a game they use the same shyt M$ slanging :obama:
So what this means is most games made for PS4 (the ones that matter) will be "ports" and you will see this for yourself at launch :skip:

Say sumtin else nugga, dis pinky
