XBOX One Preparing To Offer External Hard Drive Support

An Xbox One problem that’s likely annoying hardcore gamers may “soon” be fixed, Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb revealed on Reddit, as the company will soon bring external game storage support to the console allowing users to install and play games on external hard drives. However, it’s not yet clear whether those external drives will be able to offer more storage space than the 500GB available by default on the Xbox One. Hryb apparently doesn’t know yet whether there will be any limitation when it comes to external media storage support, but the exec will share information once it becomes available.

Last May, Microsoft senior director of product planning Albert Penello said the Xbox One’s USB 3.0 ports can be used for external hard drives, Polygon reports, saying that the internal drive of the console can’t be removed or serviced by the user. Comparatively, PlayStation 4 users won’t be able to add external drives to their console, but they’ll be able to replace the drive the PS4 ships with.

Interestingly, Hryb also hinted that more Xbox One features are in the making, without revealing what they are.

“Lot’s of good work going on to make the console even better — some you’ll see soon, some will show up later. But: it is all good stuff,” he said on Reddit.

I'd rather have both but if I had to pick and choose it would be external over internal since it's easily swappable...If games are gonna be 50 gigs one HD won't suffice regardless

so connecting an internal hd is as easy as an external USB and you are asking where do they find me?

never said it was rocket science but USB external is still easier

a degree in computer science might tell you that a hdd can't run off sata alone. usb on the other hand is only one cable that carries power and data

I think it was just a statement on how ridiculous it sounds that people are waiting for a patch to give them something as basic as external hdd support
