We can do it literally any time with nuclear weapons.
But it's happening slowly anyway with climate change.
Humans will be the only animal in the history of this planet that causes it's own extinction. Large dinosaurs died out because of volcanic activity causing an ice age and an asteroid hitting earth.
Humans will die out because of nuclear war or greenhouse gasses changing the climate and making it harder and harder to grow the food we need to keep our numbers up.
I like to think of Genesis as an allegory for human greed, but also a retelling of human history. For hundreds of thousands of years we lived in simple societies but then for various reasons started creating more complex and hierarchical societies. Greed fueled innovations which evolved our technology, but the inherent flaws within us(lust for power and control) remained. Now we are still the same flawed creatures that make bad decisions while "being as gods" with the kind of power to do a genocide on the entire species.
