He was probably thinking of profit for better or worse every invention had profit as the sole goal.

Records of use go back to women in eastern Africa and the Middle East, men used make up later on in the west and even then it was an accessory or costume not what we would consider 'make up' (hiding blemishes, beauty, etc.).
