What's special about Whatsapp?

Outside of the US most other countries especially 3rd world ones don't have major cellphone companies instead they have smaller ones these companies usually offer very shytty plans as far as texting is concerned so whatsapp allows people to send maximum amount of messages (pics and vids too) while using minimum data, other great thing is that you can message anyone in the world with the app without getting any extra charges

Whatsapp blew up mainly because of group chats, quicker and more reliable than SMS. In Europe anyway!

Where I'm from it makes sense to use it over text, text has a very limited character count and is more costly than Whatsapp.

As far as bbm/blackberry goes... Whatsapp is what happens when you get arrogant and complacent at that #1 spot, thinking your physical keyboards, bbm and the business sector will protect you against the onslaught of touchscreen computing. Only to get thrown in the bushes by your fanbase and have an app that's a direct copy of yours get sold for 4x the market cap of your entire company.

Nothing could of touched BBM a few years ago. It was ahead of it's prime, it was just like a MSN. BBM even allowed to you see what songs your friends were listening to on their phone.

Only thing better than text is that photos/videos are free to end, otherwise it's the same as texting.

Everything in my contract is free for £25 a month (calls/text/data).
