People don’t like politics because it’s nuanced, it’s a bit complex and most people like things simple. They don’t want to have to think and pick sides based on what they and their family needs or wants…I listen when people tell me they don’t watch the news. “It’s all negative stories anyway” nah nikka, you just don’t want to think or look at things in a nuanced way that’s really all it is…

Cuz people will go thru messy celeb news, babymomma/daddy situations, or discuss complicated tv shows and movies like seasoned debators…

Well, I'm going to say this, I could understand why she felt that way. One should be able to know who their state congressmen/women are, the names of their local council that represents their district/neighborhood, etc, etc.

It's like this, when you're an adult you owe it to yourself to stay on the “up and up” because politics affects your life (living situation, taxes, healthcare, employment, etc) whether you engage in it or not.

It's mind-boggling how many Black folks out here disregard politics, and then get caught up, for better or worse, when new laws are enacted and/or removed. Whether you vote or not, Black people should at least be privy to politics, locally and nationally; there is no excuse for choosing to be willfully ignorant and oblivious just for the sake of it, that's a disservice to yourself.

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I didn't care much for politics either, but now, entering my 30s, that sentiment has changed. Why? 'Cause now I'm a grown tax-paying man with responsibilities, people to care about, and interests/things to protect, things to lose, etc, so it's vital to stay engaged in knowing “who's who and what's what”.

Even when our elders didn't have the right vote, don't think for a minute they were stupid and/or not paying attention to the political environment around them; they were well-versed on the topic, and stayed engaged, y'know knowledgeable.
