I don't know how the Rolling Stones are perceived in the rock world I thought they were legends and revered as such. Maybe Grateful Dead or someone might be a better example? A group who is all but forgotten in mainstream circles but had a huge impact on the music. I'm not a rock head tho so I'm not sure who to compare them to.
