My bad it's kinda hard (for me) to explain but try to get a fuller sound from them maybe double them up and/or add the same sample at different tones or notes

I think a really thick layered clap with an 808 kick layered in it would work better than a normal snare here for what it sounded like you were going for. Sounds like something to be chanted, you want cats clapping and stomping here. The direction of this track has some real potency. Peep some Dr John "Gris Gris" for reference
