Funeral for sneaker store owner shot in Rahway to be held today
Funeral services for the Rahway sneaker store owner who was fatally shot last week will be held today.
Jamal "Mally" Gaines, 21, of Rahway was killed inside East Coast, the Irving Street boutique sneaker shop he co-owned, just after 9 p.m. on Friday. Authorities are investigating the shooting but so far have not made any arrests or released a description of the shooter.
Visitors are welcome beginning at noon to Agape Family Worship Center on East Hazelwood Avenue in Rahway. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m.
Vigil for Jamal "Mally" Gaines, Rahway - Feb. 27, 2016 More than 150 people turned out for a vigil after Jamal "Mally" Gaines, 21, was fatally shot Friday night inside the East Coast boutique sneaker store he co-owned on Irving Street in Rahway.
Gaines graduated from Rahway High School in 2012, before pursuing his passion of becoming successful in the sneaker business.
Gaines' mother Tina Wilson described her son as a hard-working entrepreneur who read finance-guru Tony Robbins books and studied inspirational businesspeople. Gaines' friends testified to his motivation to succeed and his positive influence on others at a vigil held Saturday.
"Mally worked at Fed Ex while attending Union County College for a short time when he was offered an opportunity to buy into a clothing store," his obituary says. "Instead, he turned into a sneaker store quit his job at Fed Ex and dropped out of college. Soon after, his business failed leaving Mally embarrassed but determined to succeed. He returned to Fed Ex and kept pushing to open a sneaker business with his partner "SoleyGhost". Six months later, he opened East Coast Boutique on Irving Street which had opened in July of 2013. His other business partners also included Jeremy Mendez and Jackie Jin. Mally also co-owns Re-up Philly in Philadelphia, PA which had been his newest endeavor."
