MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A dispute over a PlayStation game led to a deadly shooting in the parking lot of a northwest Miami-Dade apartment complex, according to arrest documents obtained by Local 10 News on Thursday.

The shooting happened on Aug. 14 in the county’s Biscayne Gardens section. Authorities booked the 23-year-old suspect, Derrick Terrell Ates II, into jail on a second-degree murder charge early Thursday morning.

Investigators with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said Ates had been arguing with Izayah Gaffney Lilavois, 25, over live chat while playing NBA 2K25 that morning.

Authorities said Lilavois met Ates at the Park Towers Apartments complex at 777 NW 155th Lane, near the Golden Glades Interchange, just before 11:45 a.m. after Ates sent him his address. The two kept arguing, deputies said.

Deputies said Lilavois slapped Ates, leading Ates to pull out a gun and shoot the unarmed Lilavois “multiple times” before fleeing to his apartment. He would later surrender and give a “full confession,” they said.

Doctors pronounced Lilavois dead soon after he was airlifted to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital.

The arrest report doesn’t state whether Ates or Lilavois had ever met in person prior to the shooting.

Records show Ates, pictured in his Miami-Dade County mugshot wearing a hospital gown, was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed as “to be set” as of Thursday afternoon.
