Being your own man means standing on your own two...if buck owed some white man/company money nobody would be expecting them to coddle him, pay his debt, or do anything for him that they couldn't directly profit from.

Give him the same amount of money, the same attitude, and a different boss, he'd be in the same situation he is now, if not worse. He didn't have to "stand on his own two" like everybody else until he decided "be his own man" by creating a conflict of interest between the people who were feeding him and the people who wanted to use him to attack that brand, he feel for the okie-doke and even admitted as much.

In fact, I swear I read an interview a couple years ago where Iovine went into detail about how he'd handle such a situation (an artist getting out of line with him), something about letting him build a big house and pulling the rug from up under his ass...that's basically what's been going on since Fif dropped "smile" if you ask me.
