Why not MMA

What are the pros/cons of each

"MMA" gyms are going to have schedules where you can drop into a boxing, muay thai, jiu jitsu/other grappling arts classes. He can join up at one of those gyms and pick and choose accordingly. MMA is an umbrella term (MMA is not an "art"), although some gyms do have "mma" classes where it's a mix of boxing, muay thai kicks, and grappling for the full hour...it wouldn't be my choice.

Learn boxing footwork/strikes and some form grappling and you're good to go. Best best is to join an mma gym that offers boxing classes and jiu jitsu classes and then start to SPECIALIZE in both of these..rather than trying to be a jack of all trades. It's better to have your striking down pat, along with your jiu jitsu than half assing a bit of "everything" IMO

Yeah it's a good combo, it seems to be most common with combo gyms. I suggest if they have wrestling go for that too. I think wrestling will be of better benefit, because of the explosive pace. BJJ is more like a chess match. I'd say do boxing and wrestling first, then complement with Thai kickboxing and BJJ.

I can count the number of fights I've had in my life on one hand but I want always want to learn striking in case of an emergency. I never played any sports growing up and BJJ looks fun as shyt.:ehh:

I just don't want my neck getting fukked up. :patrice:

I did boxing for a month..I didnt sign uo to slar because it was more..I DID bag work and cardio ..I felt great but was still anxious and not confident in protecting myself.

Fast forward to recently I PICKED up GRACIE BARRA..and in my first class was put up with a black belt having to try aand take him down.

You get physical with another person from day one while utilizing techniques that you can apply asap. The proof is there...

I'm confident and humbled and feel much better about defending myself.

And in my experience even guys with a wrestling background can hold their own against higher ranking belts in Jui Jitsu...and they have a leg up when they start.

If your homie does boxing he should try to be sparring as soon as he can..thing is boxing seems to focus on basics before letting you in the ring...Jui Jitsu you get throw into the mix..ASAP!

You learn real quick about yourself when you're going up against cats submitting and choking you while ALSO learning how to defend against them and use those moves.:wow:

Of course. I just think boxing translates better in the streets..evasive/quick foot work and you're using precise punches (and not legs which will be hampered by jeans/pants)

I disagree because the Muay Thai clinch and elbows translate extremely well into actual fights, much better than anything I've learned in boxing, wrestling, or bjj, because all you need to do is hard shell, smother and throw some elbows that put dents in peoples faces, which IMO is much better than hard shelling, smothering, and taking them down. Boxing is definitely better if you are squaring up with someone because 99% of the time they are going to throw a right hand that you can just slip and KO them with very easily. But that hasn't happened to me since I was like 15 years old. When you are disoriented, or its a group brawl give me my muay thai over any 1 sport, obviously a mix is ideal.
