The US is an oligarchy, study concludes

The US government does not represent the interests of the majority of the country's citizens, but is instead ruled by those of the rich and powerful, a new study from Princeton and Northwestern Universities has concluded.

The report, entitled Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens, used extensive policy data collected from between the years of 1981 and 2002 to empirically determine the state of the US political system.

After sifting through nearly 1,800 US policies enacted in that period and comparing them to the expressed preferences of average Americans (50th percentile of income), affluent Americans (90th percentile) and large special interests groups, researchers concluded that the United States is dominated by its economic elite.

The peer-reviewed study, which will be taught at these universities in September, says: "The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organised groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence."

Researchers concluded that US government policies rarely align with the the preferences of the majority of Americans, but do favour special interests and lobbying organisations: "When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organised interests, they generally lose. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the US political system, even when fairly large majorities of Americans favour policy change, they generally do not get it."

Still will vote. Previous generations fought for our right to vote. However miniscule and no matter the voter suppression tactics, it's like not putting a lock on your door and mad when someone opens it instead of putting a lock (doing what you can) and someone kicking it down anyways.

Absolutely should vote...

The real thing is, we shouldn't allow rich people into politics...

If your networth is over 5 million, you shouldn't be allowed to lobby or run for office...

And corporations shouldn't be able to lobby period.

The only thing the federal government respects is money or violence. Gun rights is an example where money and the threat of violence becomes an effective unholy matrimony. I do think voting on a local level can affect some positive change if organized and channeled properly though.

Remember that study saying America is an oligarchy? 3 rebuttals say it's wrong.

Since its initial release, the Gilens/Page paper's findings have been targeted in three separate debunkings. Cornell professor Peter Enns, recent Princeton PhD graduate Omar Bashir, and a team of three researchers — UT Austin grad student J. Alexander Branham, University of Michigan professor Stuart Soroka, and UT professor Christopher Wlezien — have all taken a look at Gilens and Page's underlying data and found that their analysis doesn't hold up.

The TRUE issue with voting is that local news (to most people) is NOT news...

We watch CNN, Fox, NBC, etc. etc. and get national news. And then we want national reform. Meanwhile we don't even know what the reps name is in our district (or even what our district is :mjlol:).

People don't want "day to day" change. They want these big oversweeping notions to be in their favor. People say "yeah...we don't want standardized healthcare...that's socialism" meanwhile their Aunt doesn't have healthcare. They say "Why should we spend all of this money on social security...we need a strong military" and they are 5 years from retirement with no pension or savings.

Your vote does matter... but it depends on what election you are paying attention to. You should know who is in charge of the school board in your area, who the judges are and what they stand for. You should know who your senators are, etc. etc.

People who think voting is once every 4 years are :snoop:

No shyt.

The biggest evidence is there is no universal healthcare.

I’ve yet to hear majority of US citizens against it.
