Back in college I had a sociology class and the instructor had us conduct some social experiments like this as a project. I was only brave enough to do it once and got pretty much the same reaction. I think there was like one person in class who didn't get that kind of reaction and I think it was because the person they tried it on was an old lady. IIRC the project had something to do with social/cultural norms and stuff.
