If it's not safe to walk or bike where you need to go, you'll drive. If you drive, you're not being physically active and you need a minimum of 30 min of exercise a day. You're not productive either if you're in the car as opposed to walking or using public transit

It was by the design of the automobile 🚗 industry to make folks more reliable on cars to sustain their industry. They were in cahoots with real estate developers who were able to get cheap land to build homes in what we call the suburbs. It’s a deep game.

i cannot stand these walkability hype young affluent dudes at all...

not everyone is able bodied with time to kill

Very short sighted. A lot of people point out that because of the way cities are designed in America (to be very car centric), things like public transportation, and accessibility to other modes of transportation have been compromised.

Knew it was Not Just Bikes when I saw the title. Good channel.
He's been keeping his foot on that bad design neck for a minute now. Proud to see that channel growing.

He goes into details about this in some of his other videos too. The concept of jaywalking for example was created to take the responsibility of human death by car off careless drivers and back on to the public and it worked :snoop:

If you're not affluent, it's actually in your best interest to have a city designed for people rather than cars. When there are more public transportation options, walk ways with good pavement for wheelchairs or 2/4wheel walkers, people with disabilities can navigate the city and get where they need to go without having to pay for an uber/taxi or spend money on a car, insurance and gas.

Yea but you shouldn’t have to live in a place where only one way of getting to point B is doable.

There are places in America well most of America where if your car is fukked up and you broke you might as well call out of work cause the Uber fees won’t cut it for some folks

It’s also redundant for low income people own cars unless they need them.

It makes no sense why a POOR PERSON is paying a car note, insurance, gas and maintenance.

The first step to getting out of poverty is to not have that much bills.

while i get what yal are saying, i do, you have to consider that this is a very common pitch seen at all kinds of gentrification efforts

whether its stacking low income people on top of each other and forcing them all onto one public line, pushing for bike lanes in older communities which restricts how people have been an in area for years are able to get in and out, to justifying new housing developments and public support for particular communities, etc

this is part of the playbook fr. if you take dc for example, they're NOT trying to stop the crime anymore - they're molding the city around it. the 'walkability' perch has massive caveats to how its presented, and to who

I would actually ride a bike everywhere if Americans on average weren't shytty drivers, the amount of bikers getting killed by distracted drivers is enough for me to embrace the sedentary lifestyle.

What I noticed overseas (Greece, Turkey, Germany, France, etc.) hella people rode bikes and you didn’t really see sloppy fat disgusting humans at all. Even the bigger people were actually firm not soft and blobby.

I know a lot has to do with the food as well but they definitely seem more active out there, where I was at least
