Falcom has announced Ys X: Proud Nordics, a significantly upgraded version of Ys X: Nordics, featuring a new story, new setting, and numerous new elements. It will launch in 2025 in Japan. Platform…
Finished this up and did basically everything in 67 hours. I really had fun with this one.
The gameplay has a good foundation, but execution makes it far too easy. Imo my opinion, boss design needs to be adjusted. Proud Nordics, I will probably play higher difficulties since hard or below is a cakewalk. There is one boss early on that has the good intention of forcing you to play the Dual mode, which is how you parry. But once you master that, the game is far too easy, as I said. Late game is a walk in the park.
I do think that if they work out the kinks, the gameplay has a lot of potential and can exceed the party gameplay ones. Maybe they do that with the remake of Ys V, which only makes sense at some point.
Karja is a great heroine, imo. Close to Dana in Ys X, she compliments her game as Dana does hers, granted they are two different characters entirely. With the new gameplay style, really gives her a chance to shine and some really cool development. Plus the friend portion of the crew is pretty good, and I did like them a lot and their stories. Reminds me of the group in Ys VIII.
Exploration is much better than Ys IX, but lacks the immersion that VIII had. Part of it is exploring the sea, but lacks the vibe, but I get what they are going for here.
One note how much the creators love Dana. Lila's mermaid resembles so much of the early design for Dana.
The start is slow; if this were Trails, it wouldn't be an issue. But Ys people play for the gameplay.
Music is dope and it does its thing.
Good Ys game, but the gameplay issues are what keep it from being a great Ys game. Will play Proud Noridcs eventually when I run through the whole series for the first time.
Weird that they prioritized Ys for the Switch and Trails for Playstation, since I would argue the opposite would be preferred.
