America and France keeps them on a leash. A second revolution wouldn't work due to lack of weapons, support, money, and leadership.

Thinking about Haiti just makes me depressed

Above the fray.
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/haiti/article250769074.html?

I was just reading the news and saw the above story and it got me wondering...

People always tell me that the government there ain't shyt, so why is it on them to change the image?

Who's the actual people in power in Haiti? Educate me, brehs

Yeah, the Germans married into Haitian families in the 19th/20th century. Circumvented the laws against whites owning land by doing that and passing it down to their mixed race children.

Outsiders worked around land ownership bans by marrying into wealthy Haitian families, going back the late 19th century. Middle Eastern origin people have done the same thing over the past 60 years. They own the companies that import food and products into Haiti, and own distribution.

They have commercial ties to their countries of origin, they technically have diplomatic titles/ties and they've used their wealth to block others from entering certain industries. Not just wealth, but power and international connections.

That power protects and insulates them.
The old money mixed race Haitian families have wealth, control of certain industries and financial ties to France and Canada
In the West, powerful people influence politics with donations. In developing countries, they influence politics directly.

"Owns" is a strange way to look at it. Policy in Haiti and the lives of the majority of Haitian people are largely dictated by the IMF and the Development Bank on the economic side, because those are two of the largest holders of debt - meaning Haiti's debt is mostly controlled by the U.S., France, the UK, and Germany.

Venezuela owns a lot of Haiti's debt, but the relationship between Haiti and Venezuela was far more mutually beneficial, than the other nations.

There's also direct U.S. backing and involvement in the "elected" government, as well as control over much of the nation's imports, the weapons, and the austerity policies.

The petit-bougeoisie that lives outside of Port-au-Prince (places like Petion-Ville) also have a lot of local control - the same of the Haitian diaspora living in France, the U.S., and the UK.

As for the slums and much of the hyper-impoverished areas, the ownership is largely in the hands of local politicians and extra-institutional leaders like popular religious figures, and gang heads.
