Parents at a Florida school were asked to sign off on their students' attendance at Black History Month events, a local outlet reported.

WPLG reported that parents at iPrep Academy in Miami received permission slips asking them whether they wanted their kids to participate in February's Black History Month activities.

The offerings include schoolwide and classroom-based presentations "showcasing the achievements and recognizing the rich and diverse traditions, histories, and innumerable contributions of the Black communities," WPLG reported.

One parent, Jill Peeling, told the local news station she was shocked by the form, which would allow parents to remove their children from classes highlighting Black accomplishments.

"I'm concerned as a citizen," she told WPLG, adding that she initially thought she'd misunderstood the form.

Steve Gallon, a member of the Miami-Dade School Board, told WPLG that the policy aligned with a recent state board rule, an extension of the Parents' Bill Of Rights.

"We have to follow the law," Gallon told the local news station.

He added: "Something feels very off here, and the fact that the school needs to cover themselves against the state feels even worse."

Florida's Department of Education, in a statement sent to Business Insider, called the story a "media driven lie."

"Any insinuation that students need permission to study African American history is absolutely false," it said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida has made Florida's schools a battleground for the culture wars, implementing measures such as banning teaching on sexual orientation and gender identity and controlling pronoun use.

His administration has also introduced laws banning books and initiatives for diversity, equity, and inclusion at universi
ties.

DeSantis has framed this as a war on "woke" and an expansion of parental rights. But his critics have decried it as encroachments on academic freedom and human rights.

Marvin Dunn, a professor at Florida International University whose work focuses on schooling practices and race relations, told WPLG he's concerned that decisions like this latest one would have detrimental effects.

He said there would be "unequal learning" among students on Black history.

Dunn linked the move to DeSantis' wider agenda, which he described as an attack on education that would "make teachers more cautious about what they teach, and it's working."

What's happening in FL about AA History is troubling. And unfortunately, it seems to represent the views of a large number of whites who feel offended that their kids are learning about the true history of America.

So why aren't more black people on this board upset about it?

I went to a private school and we had a Martin Luther King Day with that had various 30 min to 1 hour workshops in different classes with different speakers. One workshop might be about how media used to portray black people and they would show clips from old Disney movies. Or they might have a workshop about a historic racial hate crime like the bombing of the 16 street Baptist church, or what happened in Selma. They even had one on Attica, Harvey Milk, etc.

We even had a workshop that had a regular transgender woman. However she wasn’t a drag queen. Just some dude with longer hair, in jeans, and a sweater. Actually really informative and this was back in 2003.

We had to sign a permission slip for it because the kids would not be taking NORMAL classes and they needed permission to use this day for non school curriculum activities.

Everyone signed the permission slips, we went to the events, these private school crackers had no problems.

NOW that racial tensions are so high everyone is being especially pissy and gay about this. Whites are now going to keep their kids home and everyone else is going to push back harder on the opposing end. Just gay and pissy.

I couldn't answer that question for them.

My speculation is that white politicians bully and violate us around the globe continuously, and generally we are powerless to prevent or stop it.
We vent that frustration towards one another. In the form of the various online wars: diaspora, gender, region, etc.

So you'll see lot of activity over a random social media post by some obscure person, and less about elected officials and policies that affect people.

The point of the school system is to teach kids how to be subservient to white people and white supremacy. True history of any type, especially concerning African Americans were never taught in public school..and not one history book written by African Americans is used in public education..this parent bull of rights law just puts a stamp on what's already been...stop begging masta to teach our kids there version of Black history and learn to teach your own kids the beauty of our history, present and future
