Can we change the way we deal with non-violent offenders, sure.

And do we need to do more as a society to help impoverished communities and create pathways for youth so they won’t see crime as the only path or alternative? OF COURSE.

But violent offenders need harsh treatment because it helps serve as a deterrent. When people know there are actual consequences for the horrible shyt they do, it makes they at least pause and think about what will happen if THEY do the same thing and get caught.

It’s been crazy seeing all the looting going on in Cali this year because these thieves know they will just get a slap on the wrist.

Nonsense

Violent offenders need the harshest punishment possible. You out there murdering, hurting and raping people you should spend the rest of your life in prison or dead depending on the crime. fukk their rehabilitation

It’s the way we handle non violent criminals that needs to be looked at.

Well said

Violent criminals (murderers, domestic abusers, even some armed robbers) shouldn't be taken lightly. Harsh sentences.

Nonviolent drug USERS shouldn't be given any harsh sentences at all

Someone poor person who steals food from a big chain grocery store? Not good, but that is fixable

Bro.. people are losing family members left and right on some dumb shyt. I’m talking either the matriarch or the family, or the damn future. I literally talked to a lady that lost her 5 year old little girl and her 18 year old son in one year to gun violence. These people are not trying to hear no stats and talking about teams and shyt. They want Justice for their families! This is stupid AF. Are these people willing to put their lives on the line? I’ll shut up if they are.

what data supports this tho?

besides incarcerating them and making sure they can't physically harm others, what else do you want done?

monsters create monsters and our prisons have been a school for hardening criminals for decades. many of the former prisoners tortured at guantanamo bay and abu graib prison became insurgents fighters or went back to being terrorists with even more zeal.

I absolutely do believe repeat violent offenders need to be removed from society for a period of time or in some cases remain forever in the states custody.

there are thieves everywhere but people are worried more about how to punish them than addressing why they're stealing in the first place. it's the issues that was left to fester and now the resulting problems is too galling to ignore.

There is a Memphis thread about a woman being kidnapped and likely dead because someone was released from 20 years in prison.

Above the fray.
If you lower the consequences of violent crimes, more people will commit violent crimes. Most people don’t do bad things out of a fear of consequence.
Yeah, unfortunately we've seen genuine attempts at criminal justice reform hampered/ stopped because of the actions of the hardcore criminal element. We've seen this happen in real time in different cities.

They will eventually stop the national momentum for reform. Just like they ruin everything else.

It's like playing chess. Small pieces are being moved for a greater position. Either if it's another crime bill or letting areas get run down so it'll be a better investment for real estate investors/developers. This crap has it's purposes.

Honestly the real change starts at home. These parents need to to take responsibility for their kids. They know early on if their kid is becoming a problem and should make efforts to change their direction. No amount of social justice or “abolition” is going to the change that.

The goal should be to stop these kids from becoming criminal minded. Not rollback thier punishments.

And im referring to violent criminals i.e. robbers, rapists, thieves, murderers etc

social justice and addressing income inequality would absolutely effect a child's upbringing. when parents are stressed because of money or dealing with inequality it's felt in household because that stress manifests itself thru neglect, anger and sometimes abuse.

America has the highest number of prisoners in the world and it isn't stopping crime.

Well yea because it’s not JUST about incarceration. It’s the other stuff we all have detailed above.

All the investments we make NOW won’t pay off for at least a generation, which is why we can’t easy off our responses to violent crime immediately. Helping communities with financial support, programs for children, job programs, etc will build up the children of today for tomorrow, and maybe we won’t need the prison system to be what it is in the next 30yrs.
However these grown ass adults out here running amok aren’t going to necessarily change their tune in their 30s+ because we are now changing the approach to violent crime. Naw, that 33YO running around r@ping women and shooting men probably isn’t going to be reformed and ready to be a healthy member of society at 39. If we’re talking about a 15YO, yeah you can probably get through to him.
