i grabbed one off ebay to play with... i just did the letterbomb exploit to install homebrew and bootmii. my powered usb hub (18 ports!!) actually works with the damn thing, sadly generic USB controllers are NOT recognized as generic HID devices like i was hoping, so im stuck with the wiimote until the classic controller i just ordered gets here. i got emulators for everything from atari to PSX.

im honestly kind of impressed by the performance of this lil guy. its an old ibm powerpc processor, pretty much the same as the ppc7500 (aka the G3), and the graphics hardware is kind of pathetic, but im still impressed by what it can still do!

they made a jellyfin (plex fork) version for it, so im gonna check that out next :blessed: i cant wait to watch my bluray dvd rips in 480p! :troll:

all in all i'm glad i bought it. i'll probably get tired of it, but its definitely been a fun weekend fukking with it. re4 with the wiimote is still as great as it was 15 years ago. shyt had me scared after that cabin fight :picard:

anyways, any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. i'd love to find a way to stream online video with it, lol

best $40 ive spent in a few years

Yes! I modded it in December so I could play downloaded ROMs (see Vimm's Lair*)

I don't even play games like that but it was something I'd been meaning to do for a long time, as in since lockdown lol. Twilight Princess is nice.

If you have a Mario Kart disc you have to try CTGP Revolution, it adds so many extra tracks. I still haven't gone through them all.

You can also get games within the Homebrew Channel, like Quake or Raptor (an old shareware game) ports.

I bought an Ethernet adapter so I could play online as the WiFi it uses is too old now, I don't have the exact model atm but it was UGreen brand - some models work better than others.

I also bought an HDMI adapter. It's not really an upscaler but I think it produces a nicer signal for HD TVs than the component cable would have. I tried setting it to both 16:9 and 4:3 but it looked clearer as 4:3 EDTV/HDTV to me.

I'd recommend installing FTPii so you can transfer files to/from the Wii quickly - using MiXplorer on Android for example, or just FTP in Windows Explorer.

you dont need an ethernet adapter: youre relying on a VERY particular chipset gamble with those ugreen shyts. hate that brand :scust:

i already know this stuff but its good advice. i gave it its own 256gb ssd for holding ROMs at this point. id rather keep em all on one disc. but its got all my retro roms for emulation on there too.

you should share whats so funny with the rest of the class

i know the thing is a glorified toy ... thats why i wanted to hack it lol

I actually already had an adapter lying around but I chose this one as it was recommended on r/WiiHacks IIRC. The Amazon page for the one I bought now says not compatible with Wii, but I bought it in 2024 so it may have been a different chip. The Wii's Wi-Fi is 802.11g I believe so the only alternative would probably have been hotspotting with a phone, and I can't imagine what the ping would have been like!

I don't have much on the SD card. I put games on an external hard drive (a single USB port is enough to power a USB 3 drive, which helps when transferring from a computer) because I read in various places that the read/write activity can kill flash storage e.g. here

For some games you may need to force either the language or video mode in USB Loader GX, that got me out of trouble a couple of times

Unfortunately I cannot try any emulators as I don't have other controllers, but there are plenty of Wii games for me to try out. Need for Speed Nitro is also interesting, particularly having come from Underground 2 (one of the few games I've completed), this being more stylised.

However, I did get a Wii MotionPlus controller just so I could try Wii Sports Resort, like a sequel to Wii Sports. I've only tried archery so far but I liked it.

UPDATE: i finally figured out how to get gamecube games working as well! i found an easier solution as well

(your wii should already be homebrewed with nintendont installed)

1) grab whatever gamecube game you want off of vimms lair in ciso format
2) in linux, install wit and its dependencies
3) in terminal run wit -Bz game.ciso filetobecreated.wbfs
4) rename filetobecreated.wbfs with <gamecode> example: G4BE08.wbfs (google your game, all codes are online, try gametdb.com)
5) place file in /games on your SD card
6) run USBLoaderGX and run the game from there

this converts the gamecube file to a Wii wbfs game which loads it natively

i also used Gecko cheat codes to unlock everything in super smash bros melee, because i aint got that kind of time these days! :damn: :flabbynsick:
