I ask this because I've noticed this among older people. Even if you take a moderate stance you get looked at funny by the old guard.

Well, I don't really share my beliefs with the older people I know. I'm agnostic.
I just avoid talking about religion or I lie.
Never understood why people HAVE to reveal their beliefs like they're coming out the closet.
No one is forcing me to go to church and I don't follow some religious rules.
When they question that, I don't tell them why. I just shrug my shoulders and they leave me alone.
