is it really that surprising though? a lot of "indie" artists aren't indie at all. all those music videos she's produced look like they got a nice budget behind it. it's all an image, she is backed by somebody. she hasn't sold a lot of units, but i'm sure she's made some money...i heard that 212 song in a few commercials (even on some international channels in China) and in that Sandra Bullock movie with the fat broad.
