The pointy crown-looking WiFi 6E router you see before you was revealed by ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today. This is the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000, the “world’s first router to use the latest WiFi 6E (802.11ax) wireless network standard.” Users will be able to roll with the latest in fastest-possible Wi-Fi internet speed while remaining compatible with devices that connect with older forms of Wi-Fi data.

The ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 tri-band router works with “combined concurrent WiFi speeds of up to nearly 11000 Mbps.” That includes 1148 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band, 4804 Mbps on the 5 GHz band, and 4804 Mbps on the 6 GHz band.

This router also has the ability tap WAN aggregation for up to 2 Gbps internet connection speeds. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 works with 8x external antennas and a variety of IO ports. They include the following:

• 1 x RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbps for WAN
• 4 x RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbps for LAN
• 1 x 2.5G WAN/LAN
• 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1

Inside you’ll find 256 MB NAND Flash memory and 1 GB DDR3 RAM. Operating frequencies include 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz, and network standards IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ax, IPv4, and IPv6.

We’ve been waiting for the likes of Wi-Fi 6E for a while, now – back since January of 2020, at least. Look at our Wi-Fi 6E defined article to get the full run-down on what you’re going to need to know about this new standard – including why you might want to have it ready for your home.

This router has a variety of hardware buttons on it – not that you’ll need to tap them much – but still: Power, Reset, and WPS. There’s also a dedicated “WiFi on/off button” and a button for the fancy LED lights on top.

In the box you’ll find the GT-AXE11000 WiFi Gaming Router, a single RJ-45 cable, and a Power adapter, as well as a Quick Start guide and a Warranty card. This ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 router will be available in January of 2021 for a whopping $549.99 USD. Sound like a good deal for a router to you?

CES 2021: Hologram technology inspired by 'Star Wars' could bring 'new dimension' to smartphones

de90e1b1-e3f8-4371-85a0-7e5e2193f951-Wasp_Image.png

This demonstration of IKIN's holographic technology shows a buzzing wasp that can be interacted with.
IKIN INC.

IKIN's accessories create 3D holograms viewable in daylight from Android or iOS smartphones with a specialized proprietary chemical polymer lens – Scott's first patent involved polymers. Most hologram applications including the concert "performances" of holographic versions of Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and Roy Orbison are done in dark conditions.

When tech exec Joe Ward met Scott in 2017, "he had developed a product which would allow holograms to exist in ambient light with no headgear and no goggles," said Ward, who left his then-current job to found IKIN with Scott that year.

The two discussed creating a projection system that would improve on current approaches, he says. But a platform that would allow software developers to make use of the IKIN's technology was "really appealing to me," Ward said.

IKIN will create holographic content itself – it has already developed games along with tech demos – but the expectation is that developers of smartphone apps will license the technology. Consumers will buy the accessory, an attachment designed to match the smartphone's dimensions, so it "literally becomes a secondary portal into a dimensional world," Scott said.

For instance, you could explore your smartphone photo gallery, similar to how you peruse an art gallery. Select an image and it expands into 3D and can be manipulated (you can spin and expand it).

That interaction could be used in games, too, letting your hand serve as a controller. Videoconference calls and meetings could have real-world depth. "It has a lot of applications outside gaming," Ward said. "Multiscreen functionality, interaction with social media, we're really going to leverage that whole ecosystem."

Previously available only on Kickstarter, LUMI was the most-funded music learning project ever on that platform. Over the past year, ROLI has comprehensively upgraded LUMI Keys and the LUMI app based on feedback from thousands of early users. These improvements include:

  • Internally redesigning LUMI Keys 1 for an overall stronger build. Now 77g heavier, the keyboard is more durable. Its key action performance is better and its key sensitivity is even more precise.
  • Tripling the size of the LUMI Complete content library, now with 400+ songs and 100+ lessons.
  • Introducing new ways to read music and play songs, including through traditional black-and-white musical notation.
  • Introducing 360 exercises for practicing scales and chords in every key.
  • Improving navigation, interactivity, and the performance of the app experience on an expanded range of devices.

Airthings Wave sensors
Air quality sensors that measure risk of viral transmission and mold

wave-plus-office-1.png

Airthings

Airthings' new devices aren't purifiers, but they're innovative gadgets that could work well with air purifiers -- and could be intelligently combined with them in the future. The Wave Plus sensor tracks risk factors associated with viral transmission in work places, namely CO2 levels, humidity and temperature. It then feeds that information to office managers, who in theory can make adjustments to make the room more inhospitable to errant virus particles.

The Wave Mini is meant for in-home use, and it focuses on risk factors for mold, rather than virus transmission.

Netgear Introduces RAXE500 - An AX11000-Class Wi-Fi 6E Tri-Band Router

by Ganesh T S on January 11, 2021 12:00 PM EST

carousel_678x452.png

Netgear has a bunch of new product announcements at CES 2021, and the most interesting of the lot is the RAXE500 - their first Wi-Fi 6E router with support for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. The key here is the availability of the wide-open 6 GHz band - while the move to 6 GHz doesn't deliver any extra bandwidth, the absence of interference (and additional free channels) in that band results in more stable throughput in practical scenarios.

The availability of client chipsets - the AX210 from Intel that is already shipping in some systems, as well as the Broadcom BCM4389 for mobile devices - means that we should see fairly rapid adoption and consumer benefits from Wi-Fi 6E compared to the long road that we had with Wi-Fi 6. Netgear shared some test results of 5GHz and 6GHz connections in a RF chamber and open air scenario to bring out the benefits of 6GHz channels.

The additional radios for the 6 GHz band take the MSRP of the RAXE500 up to what the first AX12 (RAX200) was introduced at - $599. Netgear stated that the router should be available in the market by February 2021.

D-Link made a USB adapter that adds Wi-Fi 6 to your laptop

Plus some new mesh Wi-Fi 6 routers

DWA_X1850_A1_Image_L_Side_02.0.jpg

Image: D-Link

D-Link is trying to make it simple to give your computer a Wi-Fi upgrade. The networking company has announced what it’s calling an “industry-first” Wi-Fi 6 adapter built into a USB stick. Plug it into your laptop or desktop computer, and you may be able to get better performance than from your older Wi-Fi chip. The adapter advertises speeds up to 1,200Mbps.

It’s not entirely clear who the target audience is for this upgrade. You’ll need to be connected to a Wi-Fi 6 router to get the biggest benefits, and most people still don’t own one of those (the Wi-Fi 6 standard only started rolling out two years ago). And if the laptop or desktop you’re using was bought any time in recent memory, chances are it supports Wi-Fi 5, which isn’t a huge step down from Wi-Fi 6.

Wi-Fi 6 does come with some benefits, though. Devices that support it can communicate with routers more efficiently, which can lead to improved performance across a network. Wi-Fi 6 devices also support more secure connections.

The adapter will be available in the second quarter of 2021 for $100.

D-Link is also announcing two new Wi-Fi 6 mesh routers, both of which look a little like air purifiers. The higher end model, the AI M32, is a dual-band mesh system promising speeds up to 3.2 Gbps. Below that, D-Link is introducing the DIR-LX1870, which should offer combined connection speeds of around 1,800Mbps. The AI M32 will sell for $250 starting in the third quarter of 2021; the DIR-LX1870 launches right away for $130.
